Matsu Parade Takes Place at North Gate 2012/01/02

Matsu Parade Takes Place at North Gate

The 2011 Northern Taiwan Matsu Cultural Festival took place in downtown Taipei on November 5.

This year’s procession attracted numerous participants from temples across northern Taiwan, including Taipei City, New Taipei City, Miaoli County, Hsinchu City, Taoyuan County, Yilan County, Keelung City, and Chiayi County.

Presenting incense and flowers to the goddess alongside temple representatives, Mayor Hau Lung-bin remarked that Matsu worship is one of the most important folk religions in Taiwan.

He hopes that by holding the Northern Taiwan Matsu Cultural Festival, the public can feel the blessing and compassion of the goddess; it is also a great opportunity to showcase the different “Matsu culture” of the different municipalities.

The event also marks the annual “homecoming” of the golden-face Matsu to the site of her former temple in 228 Peace Memorial Park. According to the Department of Civil Affairs, the statue was relocated to the temple in Sanjhih Township after the demolition of the old temple in the early 1900s.

Following a short stay in Taipei, the golden-face Matsu will be heading to Zhubei City Tienhou Temple in Hsinchu County on November 7. Another procession in her honor will take place in Zhubei City on November 12.
