This place got amazing reviews but honestly it wasn’t very special. The decor was cute but it had a bit of a funny smell. It also was not located very close to any metro stations. There were some tasty street food vendors across the street. The staff was friendly. Not bad but not awesome either.

    very pleasant staying

The hotel is a very cute small place near the harbour, in an old area of Taipei close to a MRT station. The building was renovated preserving its old style, but adding all modern facilities to make one's staying very comfortable indeed. Nearby there are good cafes, a night market, and nice restaurants. I enjoyed Taipei mainly thanks to the tips and help offered me by Jian Shan Hotel staff, who even took me where I could buy a sim card: very friendly indeed!

A real gem in old Taipei

The staff here are exceptional!! Friendly, helpful and perfect English speakers. Paul and Chen went out of their way to help us out and did much, much more than we could have hoped for. We are cycling around Taiwan and they offered to store our bike boxes for us until we returned. The location is great, right in the heart of old Tapei, walking distance to a night market and close to the Taipei main station. Rooms are spotless, comfortable and nicely furnished. Highly recommend this hotel.

    Love this guesthouse!

Clean, comfortable, well located and staffed with the friendliest, most helpful people you could ever hope for. A couple of blocks from a great night market and lots of interesting sights. Paul, who checked us in, has known or found out the answer to any question we’ve thrown at him and has offered information we didn’t even know enough to ask. Definitely recommend.

Good stay at a boutique hotel with uniquely Chinese decor

We stayed here for 2 nights. It is an interesting and unusually decorated hotel. The theme is Chinese retro with the hotel completely designed to reflect what a house/building would look like back in the 30s, or maybe it's the 40s or 50s in China/Taiwan. Even the phones are the old style rotary phones. The decor is very interesting but tasteful. There's no elevators, and the building goes up with no rooms on the first floor, so you have to walk up flights of stairs. However, they have an innovative pulley system to hoist your luggage up to your floor for you, so that you don't have to lug your heavy luggage up several floors. The rooms themselves are extremely small. The bed is built on a platform perhaps to give the room a more open feel since everything is literally packed into a very small space. The side tables, bed, and a little ledge (that would be like a desk if it weren't so narrow that it can only be considered a ledge) are all right next to each other with little room to even walk around. The bathroom is very small as well. If you get claustrophobic, this hotel/motel is not for you. Otherwise, the price is right for a quaint boutique hotel like this and the location is somewhat centrally located. Although it is a good 15 minutes walk to the nearest MRT, there are bus stops closer than that and there's plenty of convenient stores, shopping of all kinds, and casual eateries like breakfast shops, and quick lunch places all around so that you don't really even need to take any kind of public transportation to get your essential needs met. The front desk ALWAYS has someone there, which is nice. The hotel staff's English, I would say, is pretty limited, but since I speak Mandarin, I didn't have any trouble communicating with them, and they were definitely very friendly and helpful, with giving advice on tourist spots and how to get to them in Taipei.
