A collection is a museum's core, and the works collected by TFAM over the years represent a precious record of art development in Taiwan. Since its founding, the Museum has continuously striven to collect works by senior generation artists based on the history of Taiwanese art, and acquire works that examine contemporary issues as part of professionally curated exhibitions. Based on careful research, the Museum follows the evolution of art by acquiring the finest works by artists across generations, and strives to continually supplement the collection’s holdings of important works by senior generation artists. Also, in recent years the Museum has forged a new direction by collecting temporal multimedia works, performance art, and project-based works. These activities respond to current trends in the contemporary Taiwanese art scene, support the creative endeavors of artists, and preserve cultural assets for the public.
The exhibition Along the Journey: New Acquisitions focuses on works added to the collection between 2015 and 2022. In its four sections The Traveler's Gaze, Portraits of Time, People, and Everyday Life, the exhibition presents seventy-eight oil paintings, ink paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, videos, video installations, kinetic sculptures, and mechanical installations of thirty-eight artists, and introduces the public to the Museum's new acquisitions and abundant achievements.
The title Along the Journey is related to dialogues that develop between the viewer and the exhibited works and also suggests three imaginative orientations: First, the bodily movements, keen perceptions, and re-examination of the self and surroundings triggered by the journey; second, the unknown journey upon which the artist embarks in the creation of each work, and the exploration and effort experienced along this journey; and finally, the Museum’s encounter with planned and unanticipated opportunities that arise as it interacts with collected works. The word “journey” also offers viewers an invitation to open the imagination, follow the gaze of each artist, transform perspectives, and to see and think in a variety of ways about the artwork.
