One of Mr. Lin Yutang’s most famous lines is “Like a woman’s skirt, the shorter the speech, the better.” He made this jest decades ago. Mr. Lin did not only translate the word “humor” into Chinese, but also promoted literature of humor. Famous for being a modern Chinese scholar writing in English, Mr. Lin was a linguist, philosopher, man of letters, traveler and creator.
In 1966, Mr. Lin returned and resided in Taiwan. Designed by Mr. Lin, this house integrates the style of Chinese four-chamber architecture and Western aesthetics. With blue tiles and white walls, arches and winding corridors, this house manifests the beauty of classical architecture. As to its site on Yangmingshan, it resembles his hometown in Fujian. When he was still alive, he could hear the dialect he was familiar with – Southern Fujianese, from time to time, giving him the feel of home.
Once he described this house saying, “there is a yard in the mansion; house in the yard; garden in the house. There are trees in the garden, sky upon the trees and moon upon the sky. How marvelous it is.” Mr. Lin always came to the balcony. After dinner, he loved to sit on a rattan armchair smoking his pipe. Watching the sunset at Guanyin Mountain, you can also feel Mr. Lin’s serenity.

Services & Facilities
Well kept house of much-loved authorLin Yutang helped build a bridge between East and West. He spend a lot of time in the US, but never severed his China roots. He had the facility to write in colloquial Chinese and English. His best-loved book is 'My Country and my People.' (1935) It is the best book I have ever read about the people of China. Lin Yutang was neglected for many years, but his works are now undergoing a resurgence. His house is in the Yangmingshan area. Lin loved mountains, where he was born. His house is well-kept and not overly large, but well worth a visit.
A quiet and nice place with great viewThe house is not very large but cosy and beautiful. It’s a combination of Chinese and western archetecture. The view from the back balcony is very nice. Mr Lin Yutang’s tomb is behind the house too. It’s on the way to Yangming Shan.
Beautiful and historical placrThis place is remarkable. It was the last house of a famous Chinese American writer, philosopher and inventor. His house located on a hill is like a museum with an amazing view of Taiwan. You can discover his life and philosophy. You can even buy some of his books. We bought "the importance of living". The restaurant is simple, the food is inspired by Western food and is just ok. They have several excellent coffees "grand cru". You can eat in this place, drink a coffee and think that you are back to 60s. If you like history, culture, you will like this place.
