Beautiful Italian! We love staying at Shangri-La in Taipei partly because of its excellent restaurants. Marco Polo is indeed a top notch Italian restaurant. As much as we like the Peking duck at Shang Palace, we are having a hard time deciding which is our favorite between the two. I usually try to refrain from having too much bread but the bread at Marco Polo, served with honey, herb, and regular butter, is worth the damage. The Mediterranean seafood were beautifully presented and it tasted fresh, light, and healthy. Nice wine list and wine by the glass. The desserts were airy and delicious. Not only the food was tasty, everything was plated in such a beautiful way that I feel I am truly enjoying pieces of artworks. It seems that there is a new chef this year. It was nice to meet Chef Fabio, who came out and greeted each table toward the end of our meals. We have tried almost everything on the menu over the years we have stayed at Shangri-La and they all have been pretty good. I would recommend to come on a weeknight rather than the weekend though. The weekend dinner took so much longer and I intend to enjoy the food better during the weekday.
Highly recommendedA must-visit restaurant if you are looking for a romantic dinner with good vibes and amazing food. For one, the food is both exquisite and delicious. We had homemade bread with their signature butter - honey butter- and we are absolutely addicted to it. Both the starters and mains exceed our expectation, especially the seafood risotto. Our evening ended with amazing dessert. Great service, nice stuff and good vibes all roll into one.
Prefer Bencotto for ItalianWe enjoyed exploring the beautiful Shangri-La hotel and enjoyed the fantastic lunch views of the city from the 38th floor at Marco Polo. The views are what makes the meal special. I would imagine this is a popular wedding proposal location. We were disappointed with the limited menu and limited pasta offerings for such a well regarded Italian restaurant. The pasta was average and not memorable. I did enjoy the Asiago bread with cheese on the inside. Another tabled ordered steak which looked delicious. For anyone wanting an authentic Italian meal, I highly recommend Bencotto in the Mandarin Oriental. It was truly a dining experience and the pasta was impeccable!

Top shelf Italian with a viewWhile staying at the Shangri-la it was a no brainer to give the in-house Italian restaurant a shot. Initially I was a little perturbed by the festivities of a large business function that was overflowing into the entrance of the restaurant. After doing the obstacle course through the intoxicated office crowd I entered the main dining room which had panoramic and unobstructed views of TaiPei. The service was immediately attentive and menus, drinks and bread ensued in rapid succession. The table side custom made herb butters were a nice touch and drew my attention away from the views for few minutes. This isn’t a family or casual style Italian restaurant so don’t expect to find any comfort food. If you are looking for a big bowl of Bolognese then this isn’t the place. I had the Zuppa Di Zucca to start which was a velvety smooth pumpkin soup with sun dried tomatoes. The Merluzzo cod with lemon crust in a white bean purée came next and it was both delicate in flavor and texture. Both dishes were quite special and I’d certainly have them again. There was a desert too but it escapes me now. I’d recommend the Marco Polo for a special occasion or simply for the view. Be sure to book and ask for a table by the window. Prices aren’t exactly cheap but they are fitting. Some of the steaks have eye watering price tags, but that isn’t unusual for Taipei since no doubt they are couriered in from the US.
