Located a stone's throw from Taipei Main Station, this old-time confectionary presents a taste of yesteryear Taipei along with its popular Russian-style pastries. The cakes made here were the favorites of the late ROC President Chiang Ching-kuo and his Russian wife Faina Chiang Fang-liang. The second floor area is one of the best spots in town to experience the ambiance of Taipei's early cafes.
The signature treats at the Astoria are zhongshan-style and traditional pineapple cake, walnut cake and Russian sweets. The old-style pineapple cake was rated Taiwan's best in a 2006 competition. The Russian walnut sweets are another Astoria specialty. Chock full of walnuts, they are especially chewy and delicious when eaten chilled.
