    Fabulous hotel & service

This hotel is top notch, 5-star. This is where diplomats come to Taiwan and has an air of prestigue. Their service is also fabulous- I arrived in an Uber and had forgotten my phone in the car, and the hotel tracked my taxi down, and spoke to the driver and arranged for him to return it to me. Rooms have large balconies with fabulous city view.

Only authentic Chinese palace style hotel with best barber shop in the world

Grand Hotel is an iconic heritage hotel that has been modernized for today's traveler. The best service here is the barber shop. I have traveled the world and has never had such a super experience getting a hair cut. So many messages, hot towels, it is like going back to the old world with the best professional service. In addition to the location, away from the Taipei bustle, the hotel is still convenient with free shuttle to the MRT, I can recommend the dim sum restaurant with excellent Cantonese dim sum and impeccable view. Highly recommended.

    Not perfect but impressive

The hotel is impressive looking, comfortable and good value for money. Service was friendly and attentive. The only drawbacks were that the hot water from the sink was sometimes lacking and the breakfast buffet was a hit and miss experience.

A Disappointing Re-visit after Three Decades

Having booked my stay at Grand Hotel through, I was appalled to find out upon my check-in that my name ABCD (in the order of first name, middle names and then family name) under my reservation was instead listed as a Mr. B, when I am actually a Mr. D, when I made my own reservation myself through Hotels. com. This Chinglish adoption by the hotel staff caused me to waste some 10 minutes waiting at the counter, awaiting the check-in staff to locate my reservation through I really could not imagine Grand Hotel could still be so unsophisticated or provincial after my last visit some 35 years ago when it was supposedly a 5* hotel, but unfortunately run inefficiently and ineffectively by the government, to be used to receive foreign dignitaries hosted by the government. What a disgrace! The hotel is not located in the core of the city, but in a nice suburban part. However, its lobby bar closed at 22:30 nightly and the room service at 23:30, leaving night life for hotel guests next to nothing. We managed to squeeze into the bar just before 22:30 the second night, after failing to do so the night before. After serving our bottle of wine, the manager on duty tried to wipe the red wine off the wine bottle, but unfortunately with a piece of napkin which was dropped onto the floor just before, although with the inside of the napkin. This was totally unacceptable given that he was actually a manager, not a waiter nor bus boy and given that it is supposedly a 5* hotel.

    A Grand Experience in Taipei

Finally got to experience the grand, old lady of Taipei hotels! What an amazing experience! The check-in experience was very ordinary; over-crowded lobby, long queue and 15-minute wait to be attended, requested a king-size bed and given a room with twin beds. Everything improved thereafter. Our room was huge and luxurious with the largest balcony I have ever seen at a hotel. Magnificent view of Taipei rugged geography. Several dining options but my favorite is the coffee room - we spent a few hours enjoying unique hot beverages and intriguing but delicious pastries and snacks. The daily breakfast buffet will impress any world traveler with local and international offerings ad infinitum. Not to be missed is the newly opened Tunnel Tour - a one-hour guided tour of the unique, remarkable history of the hotel, finishing off with a visit into the secret escape tunnel built for Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek and comrades in case of likely assassination attempts or attacks. This hidden section of the hotel has only recently been open to the public. If you are visiting Taipei and want a taste of the history, culture and flavor of this intriguing city, stay at the Grand Hotel Taipei. It will set you back a couple of hundred smackeroos but you will not regret it.
