Great Week's Stay over Thanksgiving Holiday

    2019-11

Our first time to Taipei was made quite welcoming by the W hotel staff! From check-in, during our stay, and check-out, the hotel staff always had a warm greeting whether it be day or night... and it's never one of those fake-greetings, if you know what I mean. CHECK-IN EXPERIENCE: A gentleman at check-in, named Vivin (spelling??), checked my family and I in (we were travelling over the US Thanksgiving Holiday Week, with a 4.5 y.o and 6 y.o), and noticed we were doing a long stay and upgraded us to a roomier room AND provided us with a packet of day-trip/tourist info, maps, and reminded me of some member benefits to make sure we leverage during our stay (great typed-out reminder, since I would have totally forgotten!!). It was such a pleasant surprise and actually we used up all that space to sprawl out (toys, shopping gifts, etc.)... so THANK YOU VIVIN!! He also made sure the kids got kid-bath amenities and kid-sized slippers sent up right away too. And since we arrived late, straight from the airport, he was swift to check us in and have the bell-hop deliver our bags right away so that we can settle in our room quickly and get a great night's rest.... which we did on the comfy/cozy beds! W-INSIDER EXPERIENCE: A big THANK YOU to Jennifer for also taking note that we were also celebrating our wedding anniversary. She had yummy treats sent immediately to our room once we settled in....I have no clue how you guys do this, but timing was impeccable, we had just finished settling in and "ring ring" comes a lovely surprise (I LOVE surprises) that our kids ended up devouring. My husband and I really appreciated the lovely handwritten note that came with the yummy treats! :) Thank you SO much! This treat started our trip in Taipei with a *bang*. HOUSEKEEPING EXPERIENCE: The staff was AMAZING! bottles of water was always replenished for us so that we can take with us when we go out each day and hydrate when we're back in our room. Thanks for keeping on top of replenishment, especially with children on the trip, having the bottled water in the room helped remind us to keep them hydrated so they don't get sick easily! After the first night, the housekeeping staff perhaps noticed we used both the tub AND the shower, so they even added another bath mat so that we didn't have to keep moving it from shower side to tub side. VERY amazing attention to detail! We're not the type of family that will call in for every small thing, so we were okay with moving the bath mat from one side to the other (not a big deal)... but I always notice and appreciate the attention to detail and anticipating needs by the staff....truly shocked me when I saw TWO bath mats that made our bath/shower time efficient. THANK YOU for the attention to details!!! IN-ROOM DINING: We had in-room dining for one night and the selection was varied from local eats to burgers, pizza, etc. But the amazing thing is... I LOVED seeing local foods on the menu (when we travel, we like to taste local food). I was bummed my younger child fell asleep during peak dinnertime, we were not able to go out and take in the Taipei evenings and eat locally. But, since there was noodle soup on the menu and a Taiwan stewed pork over rice... I was fine with ordering in for one night! When the food arrived (in a timely manner... under 30 min during dinnertime too), it was HOT and DELICIOUS!!! Even the kid's portion fried rice was delicious!!! WORTH IT since 4.5 year old can sleep and parent's + 6 year old can enjoy yummy food without leaving the room. Staff was also quick to clean up when we called for pick-up. DINING: Breakfast buffet - delicious! We love the variety of flavors that cover local delicacies to continental. Great spread. Staff was attentive too and made sure our tables were cleared of the finished plates. Dinner buffet - not so delicious (maybe because we ate there mid-week?). The grill-to-order beef all tasted the same, perhaps have different grill seasonings to pick from too? I do like the system you guys have where you just put your table number token in the grill basket corresponding to the cut of meat you want, and then it's delivered to your table. The flavor is just so lacking, which disappointed us. The hot foods selection was also disappointing... all flavoring seems to be the same. ugh. The noodles-station was much better, at least you can pick and choose what you want in your noodle soup and the staff will cook it up for you. I don't know what could be done better with the other items... perhaps start with fewer selection so that the chefs can focus on better flavor than trying to churn out many different types of entrees? YEN - food was absolutely delicious. We ate here as our Thanksgiving Dinner meal. Upon being seated, staff had already setup the table with children's plates/cups/utensils, which is great to see because it tells me the staff had paid attention to the reservation request. I really dislike it when restaurants wait until the reservations arrive and then set the table accordingly. We had the opening seating (6 pm), which I usually do especially with kids so we can be in and out. One thing I can tell is the staff is not very well trained with serving/interacting with kids (we've taken our kids to many different types of eating establishments from hole-in-the walls to many fine-dining locations, and they know how to behave when eating out). One big thing that bothered me is that when we settled into our seats, my kids brought table activities (one brought drawing items, the other small cars) and had rearranged their plates (moved it up to the middle of the table) and cups (pushed it out of the way) to make room to draw/play. Our server (male server, I forgot to ask his name), came by and adjusted our drinkware back to it's original spot. I was thinking "WTF?!" but kept it in my thoughts since we just sat down and are still perusing the menu. Maybe he's just trained in one-way of table setting and not groomed to "go with the flow" when things are misaligned? Either way, that irked me and rubbed me the wrong way that perhaps he didn't like kids? Or ABCs? Unfortunately, there was another incident during our dining experience that bothered me too. My younger child spilled some water on the table. Luckily most of it went onto his plate (which has a lip), so no big deal. My husband and I took our napkins and wiped it up and put it neatly on the top of the table. We were surprised that our server, nor any co-servers noticed and did not come by to help, nor to replenish fresh napkins for us. And to make things worse, the table next to us (all adults) had their table wiped up from crumbs near the end of their meal. So, uh... did you just assume our kids were gonna make more messes so didn't bother to tidy up? But, I KNOW it is part of your training to tidy up and crumb clean the table before dessert. So, yes, by this time, I felt discriminated against, whether it be due to the kids or due to the fact that we are Chinese, but can't speak any Mandarin. Either way, I feel your wait staff needs to be retrained with being flexible, more attentive, and know how to cater to different demographics. Lastly, please change the silverware!! The chopsticks and soup spoons are perfectly fine. But, for a nice establishment, please don't use "trendy" silverware that have super skinny handles (the handles were skinnier than the chopsticks!! crazy!). It degrades your level of attention for the whole dining experience. I was so busy focusing on trying keep the handles from slipping thru my fingers, that some parts of my meal, I didn't enjoy the experience. Please change them to Christolfe type, or something that's heavier on the handle side and can be gripped. OVERALL: I would definitely stay here again with the family. Especially for a long stay, the beds are super comfortable, the housekeeping staff anticipates your needs, so I didn't have to call them for anything out of the ordinary. It is super convenient to public transportation and a mall can be easily accessed from within the hotel (convenient when it's raining), and local eats are just steps away. Oh! and it's super safe. You always have to use your keycard to access your room floor.

I have been back and forth to Taipei however I have been reluctant to stay at W Taipei. The big question was left unanswered - W at urban concrete jungle ? I decided to get the answer myself, they have proven to be the best hotel business and weekend urban party hotel at the same time. The room is great, location is very convenience, gym is probably one of the best at Taipei, pool is warm for winter swimming and Woobar is fantastic spot for weekend unwind activities. This is the best hotel at Taipei. *Mic Drop Big shout out to: - Faith at Reception: Great customer service and attention to details second to none - Jenny at Woobar : Great customer service and remember your customers
