Simply fabulousI booked Mume with high expectations as they had been in the top 50 Asia's restaurant for 3 consecutive years and is now also recognized by Michellin. Heard many good stories about the restaurants and most are not mixed. Unlike your usual fine dining restaurant where a dress code is required, Mume is quite casual. Tucked in an alley in the Daan district the entrance and front of the restaurant isn't very eye catching. Minimalist furnishings and design without a proper sign with the restaurant's name, we were greeted by the staff and led to our table. A rather small restaurant but reservation is needed. You get to pick two different times at 6pm or 8:30pm where the long course is only served at the later booking time. Reservation is as simple as doing it online via their official website. Hosting about 8-10 small tables of max 6 diners, the ambience is casual and lively. We chose the long course but since we don't eat beef the courses where beef was involved were mostly replaced by fish. Cooked with local fresh ingredients and each of them has a very distinct taste and unlike anything I would have expected or had before. Very rich in taste and there are often quite a few layers to every dish. We also pair ourselves with a short wine pairing where we had 4 different glasses of wine to go with our food. The food was amazing and if I really have to complain then it would only have been the lobster as I had never been a big fan no matter how you cook it. I found the taste rather dull but the 3 different courses of fish we had were all very different and full in taste. The wine pairing was mediocre and probably something that they would want to work harder on but this would probably have more been a personal preference as well. I didn't find the wine brought more flavour to the food nor the reverse. I did find a couple of reviews here having comments on the service and food presentation. I personally didn't have any issues with the service. Yes they aren't the most professional servers you would expect at a Michellin restaurant. And yes the food presentation wasn't top notched but I was more info the flavours than how it looks anyway. Service-wise I think each server was patient enough in letting us know what and how the dishes were cooked and how to eat it properly to bring out its best. For a person who isn't a big fan of desserts, I still felt it was good. All in all I would come back here again on their next seasonal menu.
Underwhelming and a bit OverpricedFood was, generally, just ok. The desserts were phenomenal (and are the reason this review is 3 instead of 2 stars). We came for a nice meal to cap off our trip to Taiwan (as we do with every vacation we take) and were generally disappointed based on the hype. We did the long menu and added the tartare. Most of the entrees were swimming in oil or sauce, which really overwhelmed the dishes. As well, the sequencing of the dishes left a bit to be desired - it started off very light (tartlets and two fish courses, which were the best two dishes sans dessert), followed by fatty tartare and bread, then back to fish dishes, only to end back at a fatty braised ox tongue. The service was decent, although we felt like the dishes came out erratically (not the servers fault). We had 15 minute waits for an entree, followed by two entrees in two minutes, going out of order from the menu provided. We did appreciate the servers spending time to explain every dish to us as it came out. All in all, not worth the ~$320USD ($9700NWT) dinner cost us - and we didn’t even get cocktails or wine.
Not worthy of a MichelinWe were very traumatized and very disappointed by our dining experience on Thursday (26/9/2019). The lady sitting beside our table got drunk/high and she just ruined my wife's birthday dinner by plonking her entire hand on my wife's food. We expected the waitresses (that are supposed to be well trained in such an establishment) to notice the situation sooner and moved us to a different table as the lady was starting to show signs of being a nuisance/loud/rowdy and this made us really uncomfortable throughout the dinner (we were already halfway thru the courses). The Chef or Manager did not even come out to check on us or apologize! After the incident, we were moved to a different table which was already a tad too late! What was more disappointing was that we were moved to a less desirable table that was located behind their security/surveillance room and people were constantly moving in and out of the room. Imagine how distracted we were during our dinner! Furthermore, we had to wait for the chef to prepare a new plate for us which took another good 20 -30 minutes. Because of this, we had to cancel our movie plans and we couldn't even go to the nearer night markets as they are already starting to close by the time we are finished with our dinner courses. We are from Singapore and I was bound to fly the next day so I wanted to experience Taipei as much as possible but this incident has robbed me from it. As this is a fine dining establishment with a Michelin star status and supposedly one of the best restaurants in Taiwan and Asia, I was expecting better service recovery like probably the restaurant could have offered a glass of wine on the house or if the tartlets should have been given free of charge but all of this was absent and I reiterate again that there was no recovery service or so whatever. This has made this one of the most disappointing fine dining experiences we had around the globe thus far considering we paid top bucks for this (our dinner alone came close to SGD500). We have been to places like Odette, Les Amis, RAW, Gaggan, Suhring, Locavore, Paste, etc. and they had impeccable dining services. Would I want to visit again when I am in Taipei? Probably not.
