Quirky and convenientI had a night to spend in Taipei before leaving for Kaohsiung, and this seemed cheap and cheerful. It's close to Taipei railway station which counted in its favour. The accommodation was clean and the staff quirky and interesting. Breakfast was "simple" - their terminology - toast and spreads with a bit of fruit and tea. Not the Taiwanese breakfast I had been lead to believe in, but sufficient to fill a hole. A word about terminology ... this is, I think, a hostel. Not even a hand basin in the room. If you are prepared to share with strangers, the dormitory option seemed more spacious than the one-up, one-down closet I had.
Super cosy. I wish I could've stayed there longer....Liked · The bed WAS like a cloud, actually. Literally. The comforter was so soft and fluffy and had the consistency of a souffle. Just incredible. There was a strip of lighting that glowed behind the bed too, which looked so cool <3 Super friendly staff. Everything was great.
Close to Academia Sinica and CTBC Financial ParkI was on a conference to Academia Sinica and looking for an affordable option for staying - May Rooms Taipei was a great choice: There are several busses leaving directly in front of the hostel that go to Academia Sinica (about 20-25 minutes + a maximum of 10 minutes waiting). There are as many busses linking you to MRT Nangang and MRT Taipei Nangang Exhibition Centre, meaning easy access to the airport and the railway system. The CTBC Financial Park is in walking distance, where there are plenty of restaurants and cafés in all price ranges. The hostel itself is clean and quiet. I had a room with an ensuite bathroom and my own desk which was great because this meant I could also work in the hostel. Note that in Taiwan (like in China) hotel and hostel rooms are typically tiny (about half the size of European and a quarter the size of American rooms) and very sparsely furnitured (typically a bed and a cloth hanger and in Business hotels a desk and a chair) - the bed typically just fits in the room. This is just the way it is and one of the reasons why rooms are cheaper than in most European and American cities, so travel lightly (because heavy luggage will stuff your room) and do not complain.
Convenient to subwayEastern part of city, far from central area and airport. I wouldn’t have picked this area except traveling with friend who was staying at big western chain hotel nearby. But the location turned out to be fine; plenty of places near by for eating, shopping, massage, etc. 10 min walk to subway MRT, which is as easy to use as any other big city (like Hong Kong etc). Easy to ride that to other parts of town. Hostel is clean, quiet, friendly helpful young owners with enough English to make everything easy. Not a kids party hostel. Has laundry for guests. Lots of stairs. Dorm style rooms are basic but clean and comfortable
