Old Masters from Rembrandt to Goya presents over fifty masterworks from the celebrated European Paintings collection of the Toledo Museum of Art. Spanning the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, the exhibition encompasses a wide range of subjects, from portraiture and religious and mythological scenes to landscape, still life, and genre painting, highlighting the rich diversity of European art across different eras, regions, and artistic traditions.
Presented in six thematic sections, the works shown here underscore the essential roles that paintings have played in European history. Just as it does today, the art of the past served as a vital means of communicating power, identity, belief, and cultural memory. Paintings could be persuasive tools of authority or fantastic gateways for travelers, scholars, and collectors to imagine the past. As reflections of robust economies and structures of patronage, paintings allowed artistic workshops and creative networks to thrive. These works can offer us glimpses into the lived experiences, daily rituals, and natural environments of people across the continent, illuminating Europe's evolving roles within networks of global exchange, colonial expansion, and the natural sciences. Within these themes, paintings from varied artistic traditions, countries, and centuries are brought together, allowing the unique qualities of each to shine. Their interwoven histories and surprising connections reveal the extraordinary roles these artists and their works have played within the history of Western art.
In 2026, Fubon Art Museum is partnering with the Toledo Museum of Art and Mediasphere Communications to present two exceptional exhibitions tracing five centuries of artistic development from the Old Masters to modern art. Opening this yearlong program, the present exhibition focuses on European painting from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, inviting visitors to experience the works of the Old Masters up close and to explore the cultural richness of Western art through the paintings themselves and the histories that shaped them.
