Anchor point
4.5 3 Reviews

Thursday:09:00 - 17:00

This hall was established in memory of Dr. Hu Shih, an early advocate of liberalism and an academic known for his "boldness in hypothesis and care in corroboration." A former ambassador to the United States and head of Peking University in China, Dr. Hu returned to Taiwan to serve as president of Academia Sinica. The Hu Shih Memorial Hall was established on December 10, 1962, in the same year that Dr. Hu passed away. It is located at the Nangang residence where Dr. Hu lived during his tenure at Academia Sinica.
The Hu Shih Memorial Hall is divided into three areas, including Dr. Hu's former residence, a display room, and Dr. Hu's tomb. The surrounding grounds were turned into Hu Shih Park in 1974.

Interesting exhibits on a key figure in Chinese cultural history

One of the more influential figures in cultural history of modern China. Learned some interesting things about Hu Shih, including that fact that he had honorary degrees for 7 of the 8 Ivies (except his undergraduate alma mater - Cornell, which was a bit surprising). His residence in Academia Sinica, which was preserved after his death, was also on display. Generally speaking pretty enjoyable visit, and if you are visiting the cluster of museums in Academia Sinica you probably have an interest in Chinese culture etc, so enjoy if you do find the time to go to Nangang

    Memorable Memorial

The entrance hall contains a complete exhibit on Hu Shih, his life and his writing, with adequate signage in English. Photography is allowed. Beyond the exhibition hall is his residence, which also is quite interesting. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed within his house. Grounds are quite nice and the location is an easy walk from a nearby bus stop.
