Zhinan Temple 指南宮

Anchor point

Zhinan Temple is located at the foot of Zhishan Mountain in Taipei's Wenshan District. Built in 1890, the temple is dedicated to the Daoist immortal Lu Tung-pin, better known as "Xiangong" or "Luzu." A scholar of the Tang period, Lu loved poetry and books. He successfully passed the provincial level imperial examination and became a county magistrate. Because of his pious devotion to the Dao, Lu's path crossed with that of the Daoist immortal Zhong Liquan, who showed him the way to enlightenment. Many mysterious and noble deeds were attributed to Lu, making him one of the best known and most-loved of the Daoist immortals in Taiwan.

    Get away from it all

Get out of this otherwise cosmopolitan city and experience the real Taiwan. Peaceful, meditative ... wonderful respite from a lively city

    Our favorite temple

Chih Nan Temple is incredible. Perched above the city with beautiful views and secluded enough that not many people are there at once, it is the perfect way to escape the city and surround yourself with the serene environment of a temple.

Should be the final stop for the gondola

Zhinan Temple is a cliff side temple that was covered in scaffolding when we visited. Temples themselves weren’t anything special but the grounds offer a nice spot to gaze down at the city below while not dangling from the gondolas.

    Plenty of local color

Huge Taoist temple complex with some lovely views of Taipei Basin. Extremely loud, lively and crowded at peak times and quite peaceful most weekdays. Area around the temple (which has many walking paths) is forested and quite lovely from April to November...a bit drab and drizzly during the winter months, though. There is a tourist aspect to this place, but almost entirely local tourists, so don't expect much English.

    Took the Maokong Gondola ride

Went with my parents in the maokong Gondola. There is a food snack shop at the station. Beautiful views from the top.
