Tamsui Old Street

The far end of Old Street opens onto the Fisherman's Wharf, which is a perfect locale for viewing the sunset. Here also are the docks from whence travelers may ferry across the harbor to Bali.

    Quiet, slow moving town...

Compared to the other places we have visited in Taipei, Tamsui appeared to be a quiet and less populated town. Like the "old streets" in other parts of Taipei, the old street in Tamsui are occupied by shops and eateries offering local specialties, pastries, snacks, souvenirs, etc. There is a wharf area with more stalls selling various snacks, similar to those found in most night markets in Taipei. If you need a coffee fix, there is a Starbucks outlet at this wharf. Walking along this stretch, you will see many people fishing along the shores. The journey to Tamsui may be a little long, but if you have time to spare, it would be worth a visit. It is less crowded and easier to move around.

    Went on a Monday

I may have been to this place on the wrong day because some stores were closed and not much people. I think this place would have been more fun during the weekends. It's a good place to be for experience. I walked around the bay area which was really a good experience.

    Many finds!

The wonderful, open sidewalks make for easy shopping and eating, and the street has fantastic souvenir shops with terrific and affordable finds. It is a pleasure to be in a less crowded market area.

    Good stroll with less crowd

Tamsui district is not very near to the city center and takes about 1 hour by MRT to reach (it is the last station on the Red line). But if you're just aiming for a casual stroll with less crowd, this is the place to come. There are some souvenir shops, and interesting shops along the road, so you can easily spend a few hours just wandering around. This area probably becomes more interesting at night, Lovers Bridge may also look better at night, but I didn't stay till then since I came in the morning. This place is famous for their Original Cake (baked fresh all the time), and Agei (tofu stuffed with glass noodles). Very interesting if you ask me, and worth a try.

Don’t Make The Same Mistake We Did

Almost 85% of what we read said to check out Tamsui’s Old Street and to definitely try Ah Geh’s fishballs and tofuage (fried tofu stuffed with bean thread noodles). I say if you’re looking for a mini not-as-crowded night market with less variety of food by the pier, go for it! But I’d avoid the meal at ah geh - seriously! It’s only like US$3 to eat all four dishes on the menu but I suggest go spend your calories at a local seafood restaurant PLEASE!! We spent half a day here (namely coz the journey via the MRT took over an hour each way) but I think we would have much preferred to see more of Taipei on our short trip...
