popular excursion destination
Tamsui is now the final station of the Red line of the Taipei subway, and can be reached in a little over 30 minutes from downtown Taipei. In summer, it is a favourite excursion destination for the locals, who come for coffee, ice cream and street food. I visited on a rainy winter day, and it was still crowded,. The streetfood stands on Tamsui Old Street, as well as the candy and sweets stores are numerous, and you should try the fishball of squidball skewers, or some of the local pastries and sweets. It's a nice change from downtown Taipei..... -

Boat scam
We were dropped off at Tamsui Old Street to taste some Taiwanese street food. The eateries stretched along the street longer than what we had expected, many to see and try. Unfortunately, we had limited time to try as we were getting ready to enjoy the spectacular sunset on a boat heading to Fisherman's Wharf. We went to the first deck and asked regarding the fare. The ride cost 60NTD per person one way. What happened was the ticket lady told us to get on the boat immediately as the boat was getting ready to leave there and then. We got on the boat without finishing our food, there was only another passenger onboard. We sat there for half an hour, people filling in. The boat finally moved after waiting for half an hour, we were furious but nothing could be done. The boat was full and water got onto our shoes, the soot-covered air made it worse. On top of that, it was cloudy, no sunset. We will never waste money on this again. Just drive yourself to the wharf and enjoy watching the sunset on land, it will be so much better. As for the food at Tamsui Old Street, allocate more hours as the stretch is really long and try food until you drop, worth going for the food still. -

Food street
Tamsui Old street has lots of authentic Taiwanese street food. We managed to try fish balls in soup and bought original cake from the Original shop. Quite a pleasant walk. -

Not the best night market
We spent our last night visiting the old street and was not happy with it at all.The roads were packed with scooters making it almost impossible to make your way down the street. There are much better places to go eat then this place and would say to avoid it.
