Jingtong Old Street 菁桐老街

Anchor point

With the development of the railway, the busiest old street of Jingtong is at the exit of the Jingtong Station. Because of the increasing amount of tourists, the nearby merchants started catering to tourists by providing things such as local delicacies, agricultural specialties, and souvenir shop. In addition, although nobody knows how it started, it has become a trend in the Jingtong area to write prayers on bamboos and hang them next to the railway. Somehow, this became a feature of the Old Street.

A lovely restaurant offering delicious Taiwanese food and snacks

A lovely restaurant in the old street. The layout of the restaurant looks like an elementary school classroom. The customers sit at old kids wooden chairs, and eat at old kids wooden desk. Quite a fun experience. The owner and his wife are kind and helpful. I ordered dry noodles, pork thick soup and stinky tofu. All were delicious, especially the stinky tofu. It was among the best I ‘ve ever tasted.

    Last stop of Pingxi line

Jingtong is the last station of TRA Pingxi line. I bought one day ticket of the line and went to this small town. It is much less touristic than Shifen, but Old Street was interesting. You may feel as if you went back to the past. Jingtong is very small. In my opinion, one hour stay is more than enough.

Nice but small old street - best as part of a daytrip

We visited JingTong Old Street during Chinese New Year and were lucky enough to see new year lanterns being set off from the railway tracks. The old street is quite cute with a variety of souvenir and food stalls, but it doesn't compare to the likes of Shifen or Jiufen old streets - worth a visit if you are planning on exploring all the towns on the same railway track in one day.

    Quiet and Instagrammable Place

If you watch Taiwanese dramas, this place will look very familiar to you. A lot of Taiwanese dramas filmed here. It's a quiet little town and it has quaint shops and local foods that you can try.
