Songshan Ciyou Temple’s Holy Mother Procession event is conducted after the “Three Consecrations Ceremony” on Matsu’s birthday, after which the processions on March 25th and 26th of the lunar calendar begin. From the Shisanjie Village of Songshan, the processions are conducted along three routes heading east, south, and north. The stores and households along the way welcome Matsu with burning incense, flowers, and fruits. Upon seeing the return of the sedan chair, many people bend down on their knees to crawl under the sedan chair to pray for good luck. During the event, Taiwanese opera takes place on stage in the square in front of the temple, accompanied by the deafening sounds of drums and gongs, all of which attract domestic and foreign tourists alike.
