Near the Sungshan Train Station there is a brilliant gold and green archway, and behind it there is a night market that is especially lit-up at night. When you see an owl icon, which is the mascot of this night market, and smell good food nearby, then you’ll know that you’ve arrived.
Raohe Street night market is 600 meters long, which may sound small, but it is very comprehensive, including grocery stores, fashionable clothes, electronics—everything you can imagine. Raohe Street night market is most distinguished for its traditional snack stalls and stalls selling traditional Taiwanese handicraft items. Because of all the stalls selling Taiwanese snacks and foreign foods, you will be hit with the fragrance of all this food no matter where you go. There are the famous oyster noodles, spare ribs stewed in herbal soup, pepper meat bun and so on, and you will probably have to wait in line to get to them. Whether you prefer to snack as you walk or sit down to eat at a stall that catches your fancy, you’ll find that the Raohe Street night market is a good choice.
A warm, congenial atmosphere is generated by the rows of open-air stalls and bright lamps. It’s interesting to note that Raohe Street Night Market has been a thriving place of business since the mid-18th century, and in the area just outside of the night market itself, there is a wide variety of stores selling cheaply-priced goods. These are best suited for the most budget-minded of people.
If you visit Raohe Street Night Market, you shouldn’t miss visiting the nearby Ciyou Temple, which is always teeming with the worshippers. Behind the temple, as you may have already noticed, is Rainbow Bridge, which crosses the Keelung River—a beautiful sight near the night market. On a nice cool evening, you should take a stroll by the riverside, but after returning to the night market, you’ll certainly want another bite to eat.
