While rushing through Taipei’s MRT Beimen Station, have you ever been captivated by a historical exhibit that encompasses an entire wall? There’s more to see in the lobby, where the excavated artifacts of 12 archaeological pits from historic sites and monuments are displayed. They’re sure to instantly pique your curiosity.
The area around MRT Beimen Station, which is the Tacheng Street area, was originally the site of the Machinery Bureau and a railway factory, which were established under Qing Dynasty Taiwan Provincial Governor Liu Mingchuan. Currently, however, Beimen (lit. the North Gate) is the only visible vestige of Qing Dynasty architecture in the area. Currently, two sites have been designated heritage sites: the Machinery Bureau’s eastern wall and the Machinery Bureau’s foundation walls, both of which were unearthed next to MRT Beimen Station on the southwest side of the old Ministry of Railways. Since the Machinery Bureau repaired locomotives and served as an arms and munitions factory, it played an important role in modernizing Taiwan and can be seen as a testament to Liu Mingchuan’s active promotion of the Westernization Movement. These sites have borne witness to Taiwan’s history, and their value to its cultural heritage cannot be overstated.
The Beimen Railway Heritage Site also includes cobblestone roads from the Qing Dynasty that are of utmost historical value with regard to urban road construction. In particular, since long flagstone was used in their construction, which is unprecedented, the discovery was even more valuable.
