Whenever visiting a new city…you want to first get a feel for its past…and when you visit Taipei, no one area features as much history as DaDaoCheng.

Most notable is DiHua Street, the main roadway in DaDaoCheng, as well as Taipei’s oldest commercial thoroughfare.  Today its historic and nostalgic streets and buildings are lined with long-established businesses, stylish cultural-creative shops, art galleries, and chic cafés.

Here you’ll find the buildings’ facades are in the elaborate Neo-Baroque style. Most shop houses are narrow yet deep, often with a courtyard in the middle. They are hidden gems of old Taipei and a must-visit in DaDaoCheng.

But, the best treat awaits you.  After all of this sightseeing, go take a break at the nearby DaDaoCheng Park, at the intersection of GuiSui and MinLe Streets.

DaDaoCheng Park is unlike any you’ve ever seen, featuring Taipei’s very first “song park”.  The centerpiece of the park is a statue of Lee Lin-chiu, one of Taiwan’s most famous lyricists, who once lived in the area, and wrote many of his most famous songs while lounging along the nearby riverfront.

Listen closely, because every day from 9am to 6pm, some of Lee’s most famous tunes are played, allowing visitors a chance to reminisce of days gone by.   These folk songs were written in Taiwanese, and are classics even nowadays.

To wrap up your visit, enjoy tasty snacks available in the neighborhood, or rent a U-Bike, and take a ride over the DaDaoCheng Wharf. These days, Pier 5 of DaDaoCheng Wharf is a great place to enjoy delicious food and drink, as well as the beautiful view of the Tamsui River. And when darkness falls, you can marvel at the night view of the Taipei skyline.
