Taipei Grand Mosque
In the center of Taipei is the Da-An Forest Park, a large green oasis offering solace for urban residents.  And, along the park of Xin-Sheng South Road, are some of the city’s most noted religious houses of worship, including the Taipei Grand Mosque.

Little did you probably know that over the past few years Taiwan has made great strides at attracting Muslim tourists, especially from Southeast Asia, and was ranked in the top-five for Muslim-friendly destinations in 2019.  Many Taipei attractions are equipped with specialized prayer rooms, and eateries are more accommodating than ever toward catering to Muslim dietary needs.

The Taipei Grand Mosque is a long-standing testament to the city’s commitment toward its Muslim community. The massive structure occupies an area of 2,747 square meters, making it the largest mosque in all of Taiwan. The building’s roof features a 15-meter-high dome. And right next door is the Holy Family Catholic Church.

The Taipei Grand Mosque combines architectural elements found in mosques of the Ottoman and Persian empires, and conforms to Islamic traditions. The building exterior showcases the dome, arcade, and two minarets… which are each 20 meters tall, and are well-known landmarks for city residents.  These two towers were used for calling the faithful to prayer.  Meanwhile, the interior includes the prayer hall, cloisters, offices, library, and courtyard.

Islam forbids depictions of figurative imagery in religious art, so the mosque’s decorations are comprised largely of calligraphic art, plant motifs, and geometric shapes. On the exterior walls, the mosque is decorated with mosaic tiles, enhancing its beauty and elegance.

Muslim leaders from all over the world often come and preach at the Taipei Grand Mosque on important Muslim holidays… making it an important destination for any trip to Taipei.
