Songshan Cultural and Creative Park
Some of the most intriguing historic sites in Taiwan are relics of one of the old monopoly bureaus that dominated the island’s industry during the Japanese era.

One of these sites in Taipei is the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, located in the Xinyi District not far from the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. The park sits on 6.6 hectares of land and boasts open outdoor spaces, a pond, gift shops, restaurants, and exhibition spaces housed in the old buildings and warehouses.

In Chinese, the park is often referred to as “Song Yan”-”Yan” meaning “tobacco.” That’s because before it was a cultural creative park, this area was home to Taiwan’s first modern tobacco and cigarette factory.

The facility was built in 1937, while Taiwan was still under Japanese rule. Its design and the surrounding buildings adhered to Japanese factory aesthetics of the pre-War era. Everything from the bricks, the glass, and the nails reflected what, the Japanese thought, inspired productivity.

Today, these backdrops, including a baroque influenced garden, are popular with young people looking for that perfect selfie with a nostalgic feel.

Cigarette production at Songyan ceased in 1998 due to a decline in demand. In 2001, Taipei designated the tobacco factory as the city’s 99th historical landmark.

In recent years, Songyan was converted into a cultural and creative park to provide venues for diverse exhibitions and performances.

If you’re looking for a place to just wander around and spend a day in, then Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is the perfect place. There’s always an art exhibition or cultural performance worth watching. And, the historic buildings offer a look back in time.
