Treasure Hill
Once you arrive in a new city, probably the best place to unveil its secrets is an artist village, where creative minds explore the boundaries of art, while rooted in real life.

In Taipei, you’ll want to stop by Treasure Hill, which takes its name from the nearby Treasure Hill Guan Yin Temple… a religious site that has been venerated for centuries.

Treasure Hill has maintained its improvised look, with its winding walkways and numerous stairs. Located on a hillside near Taipei’s Gongguan area, the elevated terrain once served as an anti-aircraft garrison.

However, Treasure Hill didn’t quite take shape until the 1960’s.  Retired army veterans began building homes winding up the hillside, creating an enchanting view… just like an urban labyrinth.  Later in 2004 the area’s historic buildings were designated for preservation.  The subsequent gentrification and community campaigns culminated in 2010, with the christening of the Treasure Hill Artist Village.

Today, granite pathways and stone staircases cut and wind through the village, leading visitors to small cafés, various art installations, and beautiful vantage points of the river below.

As a matter of fact, the village has fourteen workshops, and serves as the living quarters for local and international artists who take up residency, create art, and exchange creative ideas.  Aside from artist work places, there are also rehearsal, exhibition, and performance spaces for visitors from around the world to experience first-hand the unique art scene and enchanting aura of Taipei.

The best thing about Treasure Hill is its position on the hillside overlooking the Xindian River, providing enchanting vistas, and relaxing locations for taking a stroll, a bike ride, or enjoying mother nature.  Infused with fresh air, lush vegetation, and refreshing waterfronts, it’s no wonder people have flocked here!
