Eid al-Fitr is one of the year’s most important festivals for Muslims. Like Chinese New Year in Taiwan, it is a time of family reunion. Before Eid al-Fitr, Muslims follow the precepts of Islam with a month of fasting during Ramadan. The day on which Eid al-Fitr falls marks the end of the fast, and Muslims gather together with family and friends, carrying out religious rites and observances and enjoying fine food.

As part of its quest to make Taipei a Muslim-friendly city, on June 25 the city government’s Department of Information and Tourism (DOIT) is holding Eid al-Fitr celebration activities at Taipei Main Station’s Taipei Travel Plaza. Indonesian superstars Fitri Carlina and Septi Vhanesa have been specially invited to perform, along with a number of Indonesian bands that are popular in Taiwan. In addition to the stage activities, the myriad types of food, clothing, lifestyle items, and other merchandise lines that are most in demand by Muslims are being brought together in a “Halal Market,” with all sorts of specialty stalls waiting for you to experience! Beyond this, as a warmup for the main event, on June 18 a “Dreamers Singing Contest” is being staged at Taipei Main Station’s South Gate 2 Plaza, with all foreign friends invited to come compete for premium prizes!

Interestingly, an Indonesian custom is to give out “red envelopes” at Eid al-Fitr, similar to the Chinese New Year custom of giving out lucky red envelopes in Taiwan. Therefore, on the day of Eid al-Fitr, June 25, the big head of our Taipei family, Mayor Ko Wen-je, known to one and all as Ko P, will be on hand to pass out red envelopes. The hope of the Department of Information and Tourism is that these Eid al-Fitr celebratory activities will help the people of Taipei to better understand Muslim culture, together extending a friendly hand and making this an ever more inviting, Muslim-friendly city.
