The flowering period of rapeseed flowers at the Daonan Riverside has come to an end. Taipei City Government’s Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO) commented that the area will be rearranged shortly, while the adorable Jade Rabbit Emissary and the Moon-Shaped Chair will be relocated to the square underneath the Hakka cross-dike platform in Guting Riverside Park, where the HEO has created a 695m2 (about 210 ping) sea of flowers consisting of 6,255 hollyhock flowers. Some of the flowers have grown taller, bursting with pink–white, pink, and scarlet-colored flowers. The area is expected to transform into a hollyhock flower forest by April or May.

According to HEO, the hollyhock flower forest can be found by entering the Guting Riverside Park via the cross-dike platform next to the Taipei City Hakka Cultural Park. Currently, the hollyhock flowers are thriving with lush green leaves, ready to grow taller. As the temperatures warm up in March, the number of blooming flowers will gradually increase, reaching peak flowering conditions in April or May. For the latest flowering conditions of the hollyhock flower forest, please follow the HEO’s official website or FB fan page.

The HEO explained that hollyhock flowers are predominantly grown in China and western Asia. When the conditions are right, hollyhock flowers can grow vertically and bloom, sometimes reaching 1 to 2 meters, hence its nickname Ten Feet Red. Due to their attractive towering height, hollyhock flowers are cultivated by an increasing number of neighborhoods in idle green spaces across Taipei City. In addition to Taipei Expo Park in Yuanshan, Xiangshan Park in Xinyi District, and the intersection of Lane 505, Section 5 of Zhongshan North Road in Shilin District, one may also admire the spectacular sight of hollyhock flowers at the square underneath the Hakka cross-dike platform in Guting Riverside Park. Appreciating colorful hollyhock flowers by the open, luxuriant riverside park under the blue sky and white clouds is a refreshing experience.

Recently, the shimmering golden rapeseed flowers along the Wanshou Bridge on the Daonan Right Bank Riverside Park have proven to be extremely popular among the public. The agency commented that due to the warmer spring climate this year, coupled with diligent pollination by bees and butterflies, the rapeseed flowers all bore fruit and seeds. However, rainfall in early March pummeled the flowers to the ground, prematurely ending the flowering period. Now, the flowers have all turned into spring mud, leaving behind verdant, plump seedpods containing oil-rich rapeseeds. The rapeseeds will be harvested before March 27 at the latest.
