As we enter the firefly season which crosses from late spring into early summer, the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) encourages the public to put down their mobile phones and go outside to catch the wonderful phenomenon of nature at two locations in Taipei – Maokong and Zhuzihu.

According to the agency, Zhinan Creek in Wenshan District is often referred to as the “Caonan” area. Its natural environment – surrounded by mountains and covered frequently by fog – creates a forest-like environment. Furthermore, the recent efforts in soil conservation and ecosystem protection helped to boost the biodiversity of the region, spelling a return of the firefly population. Nearby attractions include Zhinan Temple, Monkey Hills, and Erge Mountain.

Another choice destination for firefly-spotting is the riverbanks of Yangming Creek located in the Zhuzihu Area on Yangmingshan. According to Chief Chu of GEO’s Mud/Rockslide Control Section, the wetland and ladder rice fields in the area ensure a clean supply of water, which is vital to sustaining a firefly population. With the ongoing flower season, residents can enjoy a walk in the fields to enjoy the blooming hydrangeas and calla lilies in the daylight, while exploring the trails for the glowing insects by moonlight.

The GEO reminds visitors to wear warm clothing and insect repellent to protect themselves while in the mountains. Also, due to the damaging effects of strong lights against these fragile insects, the agency recommends attaching red paper filter to the flashlight and avoid the use of flashes when taking photos of fireflies. Also, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, measures such as social distancing and face masks should be observed.

How to Get There (Public Transportation):
Caonan Bridge in Wenshan District: Take bus BR10, S15, Maokong Left Line (Zhinan Temple), or Maokong Left Line (Zoo) to Caonan Stop.
Zhuzihu on Yangmingshan: Take the Red Line to MRT Beitou Station and transfer to either S9 or 129 to Zhuihu. Alternatively, take the Red Line to MRT Shipai Station and transfer to either S8 or 129 and head up to Zhuzihu. Buses 108, 109, 110, 230, 260, and S9 all stop at Yangmingshan Terminal, where visitors can transfer to bus S9.
