The 2020 Taipei Dragon Boat Festival will take place on June 25 and 26. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers have cancelled the affiliated carnival and reduce the scale of the tournament. A total of 80 teams have signed up for the large dragon boat category race.

The Department of Sports (SPD) held a blessing ceremony to kick-off practices at Dajia Riverside Park on May 23. Led by Sports Commissioner Li Tzai-li, the staff from the agency offered their prayers, hoping for a successful competition this year.

In addition to the rituals, the annual helmsmen boot camp also began classes on the same day. Li pointed out that the role of the helmsman is crucial in the race, taking on the responsibility of steering their vessels to victory. Through the four-day-long camp, coaches will educate students on topic such as how to better control the boat and how to work with the oarsmen to optimize performance.

Another spotlight this year is the professional “Rowing Tank” at the riverside park. Having debuted in 2019, the training facility enables dragon boat athletes to practice their paddling skills rain or shine.

The SPD reminded the public that pandemic prevention measures will be in place, and all participating personnel are expected to follow the guidelines. Hopefully, the dragon boat races will allow the public to enjoy the traditional holiday under a safe environment.
