In February of 2021, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) announced that it has certified Taipei City as the first safe travel city in Taiwan and Northeast Asia to receive its Safe Travels stamp. Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the ceremony on April 16 to hand the certificates to representatives from the local tourism industry.

During his address, the mayor remarked that after 1 year, the world is still reeling from the damages caused by COVID-19. The tourism industry is among the sectors severely hit by the pandemic. He does not know when the crisis will be over, and from figures from the past few days, it seems cases worldwide are on the rise again. It is possible that the jump may be attributed to the false security from increased vaccination, prompting people to let down their guards prematurely.

During the pandemic, the city government has continued to work on possible response plans. In the second half of 2020, the city government arranged numerous forums with industry leaders to discuss the prospects of digital transition in the post pandemic world. Meanwhile, WTTC introduced the WTTC Safe Travels stamp in an effort to boost public confidence in travel and tourism. In the interest of raising the competitiveness of domestic tourism industry, the city government applied for and successfully received the certification this February.

Thanks to the successful COVID-19 prevention measures implemented by the government, Taipei City has assisted 35 local businesses in acquiring the global safety stamp. These include hotels, shopping malls, tour companies, and airlines. The second stage of certification activities is slated for May.

At the end of his speech, Ko expressed his hope of making Taipei a safe and secure place for tourists. He vows that the city government will continue to work on improving Taipei’s ranking to make it the top choice as MICE destination in Asia.
