To promote discussions and awareness of human rights issues, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) organized the “Taipei Remembrance: White Terror Period Human Rights Historical Site City Tours” activities. Registration for the 12 tours, slated to take place between March and June, is open to registration starting today.

The city tours are divided into three subject areas: “Routes of Victims”, “Routes of Literature,” and “Routes of Cultural Assets.”
“Final Days of White Terror Victims” City Tour: Now Open for Registration
Participants of the “Routes of Victims” will visit sites related to the final days of white terror victims, including Sheraton Grand Taipei Hotel (site of the former Military Judicial Division Detention Center), Machangding Memorial Park (former Machangding Execution Ground), and Liuzhangli Burial Site. The tour covers the aspects of arrest, sentencing, and execution of white terror victims, leaving participants with insights into the brutal and systematic purge.

The literature tours highlight the literature aspect of the White Terror period. The main focus will fall upon the arrest of National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) students during the April 6 Incident. Participants will have a chance to visit the NTNU neighborhood in March and April; listen to lectures and tour the former residence of liberal philosopher Yin Hai-kuang in May, and explore Boai Special District in June.

Those signing up for the cultural assets tour will have a chance to learn more about Beitou District with the help of experienced guide. They will take tour participants to locations spanning tourism and leisure-oriented facilities to ones hiding the darker secrets of yesteryear’s military and political oppression.

For those who prefer a more personal and less restrictive approach, they can download a map on the city tours and set out to uncover facts about the details of the White Terror on their own.
