On October 8, Mayor Ko Wen-je presided over the press conference for the 2022 Shopping District Carnival. He noted that this year’s event will see the participation of over 70 unique shops from 31 shopping districts across Taipei. The merchants offer goods spanning food to daily necessities to souvenirs to customized products. Visitors will be able to visit all the shops at one place – Taipei Expo Park – during the event period.

The mayor noted that the city government have assisted local merchants and stores in upgrading and improving their business. The original plan was to hold the event across different districts to maximize coverage. Also, helping individual shops improve their business will have a positive impact upon nearby stores as well.

Ko stressed that nations across the world are relaxing border restrictions given the latest trend of the pandemic. Taiwan is also relaxing measures, and we will soon see the return of crowds and a rise in economic activities. This could be seen in the large crowd attending the recent Nuit Blanche event, which reached roughly 460,000 people.

According to the mayor, what is special about Taipei City is that roughly 92% of international travelers who visit Taiwan will stop by Taipei City. As statistics show, foreign tourist makes up a significant proportion of all tourists, and we should be thinking about how we should should do to prepare ourselves as global visitors return to Taipei City after the easing of border restrictions.

At the end of his speech, the mayor called upon the representatives of the respective shopping districts to redouble their efforts and work together to improve the quality of Taipei’s tourism environment. He also invited the public to come and visit the carnival during the long weekend to experience the limitless creativity of Taipei City’s shopping districts.
