The main lantern design of 2017 Taipei Lantern Festival was finally unveiled tonight(January 26th) on the eve of lunar new year. Crafted by internationally-renowned Taiwanese anime artist, No2Good, “Chick Fiesta” features a family of adorable poultry characters, including Benedict, Victor, Belle and Eggie. The unveiling is presented in full-color designs, unlike the black-and- white version in previous releases. No2Good says this year’s main lantern design breaks from the tradition of singular main lantern design and, instead, is comprised of 4 distinct and vibrant characters.

A complete simulation of the event venue was also unveiled at the press release, which included the “Westside Party” light show at North Gate, the Taipei Summer Universiade area along Zhonghua Road, the “Westside Grand Theater” light show at Zhongshan Hall, the landscape lantern area, the creative lantern area and the main lantern area. Ximending, the cetner of this year’s festival, will be populated by all members of the “Chick Fiesta” family, be it on the roofs of buildings and MRT stations or on the main stage. All of the exhibits and performances transcend those of conventional lantern festival traditions.

Mayor Ke indicates that as this year’s lantern festival relocates from expo park to Ximending and Zhonghua Road, festival organizers must cater to both the traditional characteristics of these locations with the younger demographics who frequent them. Anime artist No2Good was invited alongside more than 10 other Taiwanese designers to curate the different lantern areas. With so many themed areas and contrasting demographics at play, Mayor Ke admits he looks forward to how the festival may turn out or what the “young people” are planning. He is very excited to showcase Taiwan’s local culture and artistry to international visitors.

No2Good, the main lantern area and visual designer, expresses his intent to create a more approachable main lantern design. Previously, main lanterns have always been a grand display of the Chinese zodiac of the year. This year, however, all of the “Chick Fiesta” family members have been personified with unique characteristics. “Benedict”, this year’s main lantern, was exceptionally challenging to create. No2Good and his team sculpted him from fiberglass reinforced plastics, drilled more than 30 thousand holes on him and installed LED lights to each one. Show producer, Peng Jian-Chang, has custom-designed a theatrical light show with this main lantern. No2Good say, “It will be a spectacular show, certainly unlike any I’ve ever witnessed in all my years spent roaming Ximending!”

All of the designers have explained the conception of their designs and are very excited about the fusion of traditions and innovations. They hope to present festival goers with a refreshing take on this year’s lantern festival.
