Reading Taipei, Sampling Its Culture
Taipei: a book one can browse to find fun things whenever you like.
You can explore Taipei by MRT, bus or YouBike, and, as introduced in this issue of TAIPEI, by double-decker sightseeing bus. This provides a quick way for first-time visitors to see what Taipei is like, and gives multi-time visitors a different perspective on the city. While you are on the double-decker observing the shining edifice of Taipei 101, the magnificent National Palace, and the eye-feasting Shilin Night Market – don’t forget to keep an eye peeled for bookstores everywhere!
This issue’s cover story introduces the many types of bookstores, and highlights Taipei’s rich culture and local attractions. You will discover the enjoyment to be had at several bookstores, each with its own unique features. You will also learn how some small-scale farmers are treating their land in a friendlier way; and witness how civic awareness is being sparked and organized. This is the most enchanting and enriching part of city travel – to experience local culture!
Another of Taipei’s charms is the proliferation of typical Taiwan snacks everywhere. In this
issue, you will savor the sweet soup of Huaxi Street as introduced in Tastes of Taipei’s Old City Areas by the famous gourmet, Jiao Tong. Here, the warm-hearted soup purveyor will share his secret ways of serving to tingle your taste buds and enter your heart!
Why is Taipei worth visiting over and over again? The answer is in its renovations and
improvements. With the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade approaching, the city’s features are becoming evermore vivid and lively. At the Discovery Center’s “Ready to Go! Bravo!” Special Exhibition, cutting-edge technology allows you to interact with Universiade ambassador, Bravo. The Major Athletes section displays awards and other memorabilia of medal-winning competitors, and tells their stories of hard work and perseverance. For instance, the little-known story and training process of Universiade spokesperson, Hsu Shuching are presented. We sincerely hope it will entice visitors to join us and cheer on Taiwanese athletes!
Taipei has many varied and rich aspects, and if you are willing to take time to experience
them, you will discover all kinds of fun. The graffiti art scattered about street corners and parks softens the tough cement jungle of the urban center. If you care about the city’s trees, ponds or sky, you may spot the perched or soaring birds of Avian Liu’s book, Encounters with Avians on City Street Corners. This issue also introduces a Turkish film director who loves Taipei deeply, and uses his images to record and share Taipei’s most appealing aspects.
