On June 20, Mayor Chiang Wan-an arrived at the construction site of Nanmen Market to inspect the progress of overhaul works. He was accompanied by the heads of Public Works Department, Department of Economic Development, and New Construction Office (NCO).

During the visit, the mayor attended a briefing on the layout of vendor stalls on the first and second floors. He also asked the planners about the future allocation of spaces and requested a concrete schedule on the facility’s reopening. At the end of the session, he expressed his gratitude to staff members for their hard work.

According to NCO, the original 36-year-old market building faced a list of challenges including inability to withstand severe tremors, outdated equipment, and lack of space. The agency pointed out that the refurbishment seeks to achieve four major objectives: Retain the original tenants and pass on the memories of the old market; implement a clean, hygienic, and simple design that helps traditional market modernize; secure the Green Building Gold Label in the process of integrating market and office space, and optimize access for shoppers – thanks to the presence of three separate MRT lines in the neighborhood.

The agency pointed out that the third floor, fourth floor, and rooftop area of the building will house green spaces, while public agencies will occupy the office space on the third and twelfth floor. The floors B2 through the second floor will serve as market spaces. The parking lot for vehicles spans levels B2 to B5.

There are 66 stalls on the first floor, housing retailers who offer goods ranging from groceries to fruits and vegetables. The vendors located on the second floor include 18 food stalls and 50 boutiques selling various merchandise.

At the end of his visit, the mayor thanked the workers once again for their efforts and hoped that the new market can be completed as soon as possible – allowing merchants to move back in and Nanmen Market to reopen its doors again.
