What is “sculpture”?

Sculpting is something we have been doing since childhood. Using pottery clay, we mold the figures of ourselves and our parents. Using dry, hard toast crusts, we fold the soft bread into faces, even adding eyes and mouths.

Add Some In, Take Some Out—Playing Games with the Body starts with our most familiar tool – the body, and unfolds game experiences and ideas of playing games through “sculpture” as the central theme, guiding the audience to navigate and savor this instinctual and historically rich form of art.

“Body” is a quintessential topic in sculpture. It is not only a favorable subject and source of inspiration for artists, but also a topic that many artists spend their entire lives to study and explore. Add Some In, Take Some Out focuses on the “body” as a focal point in sculpture, and participatorily engages the audience in exploring diverse and multifaceted aspects of the “body” in sculpture, from portraying those close to us, investigating the connection between physical forms and space, to even viewing ourselves as the origin of developing sculpture.

The exhibition emphasizes on sensory interaction as a starting point, such as touching and physical movement, and introduces related ideas, experiments, and expressions created by contemporary artists. While featuring artworks from the TFAM collection as well as art projects by Taiwanese and French contemporary artists, the exhibition also includes multiple experience-oriented installations. It is hoped that the audience are encouraged to activate their own bodies with sensory participation when viewing the exhibition, and engage in a dialogue with the exhibits through playing games.
