Thursday: open 24 hours

As Shenkeng Old Street is roughly 10 minutes drive from downtown Taipei, many people make a half-day trip to Shenkeng during holidays by car. You will know you have arrived at the Old Street when you see the autumn maple tree at the entrance. Visitors can park cars by the entrance and walk to the Old Street. In addition to various dishes made with tofu, you can also try other specialty foods, including green bamboo shoots, black pig pork and boazhong tea. You will be impressed by these tasty foods.

Quaint old street but good food and souvenirs

If you’re looking for a short visit to a traditional looking street near Taipei, Shenkeng is a good option. Located such outside the city, my husband and I visited with our taxi driver on the way from Yilan County (hot springs) to Taipei. It’s picturesque and is loaded with small food stalls and vendors selling trinkets. A good way to spend 1-2 hours and get a flavor of old Taipei city. I appreciated vendors weren’t pushy but this is definitely a tourist destination.

    Short old street

Very short old street. Shops are mainly selling food, more like a food street. I spent about an hour to complete the street, not much to see. Famous food is stinky tofu so you must give it a try.

    Somewhat unusual Old Street

This is one of Taiwan old streets I know of which remains open at night during weekdays (the other one is Chiu Fan). This street is known of stinky tofu, so there are several restaurants are open at night. Moreover, most of stores on the street are open to sell local foods or souvenirs.

Though the shops are limited, the price offered are reasonable and cheap. Not too crowded and huge walkway for customers.

For a true Taiwanese experience Shenkeng street is a must see. Filled with beautiful architecture of a bygone era. Beautiful restaurants and street food with retail therapy this is an enjoyable excursion. Well worth doing when in Taipei
