Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the press conference announcing that EasyCards can be used in Okinawa starting November 7. He stressed that this day marks an important milestone for Taiwan’s EasyCard as it steps onto the global stage. He hopes that the electronic wallet can use this opportunity to further access the Japanese market.
The mayor pointed out that the ambitious project is actually two years behind schedule due to COVID-19. With the pandemic subsiding and countries reopening their borders, implementations can now continue. The delay is not necessarily a bad thing, as it gives more time for the EasyCard Corporation to prepare itself for the important step.
Ko expressed his gratitude to the company for its continuous innovation. He encouraged citizens to try out the convenience of using the EasyCard in Okinawa and take advantage of the easing of border restrictions to visit other countries.
He also thanked the Japanese government for its assistance. Since using EasyCard in Japan involves foreign exchange transactions, the process of meeting legal compliances under Japanese regulations is complicated and took some time to overcome. The efforts of everyone involved in the process all helped to make the vision possible.
According to the mayor, a local resident can charge up his or her EasyCard in Taiwan and use the electronic wallet in Okinawa. Likewise, an individual living in Okinawa can purchase an EasyCard there and use it in Taiwan.
