Zhangshan Temple
If you’ve lived in a vibrant city like Taipei before, you will know how important it is to find some moments of peace away from the frantic pace. People all over the world have their own unique ways to find some quiet moments and for many people in Taipei, the solution lies within a temple on a quiet part of Maokong’s secluded rocky road.

This charming retreat located just outside of the city is called Zhangshan Temple, and it pays tribute to Guanyin, a buddhist goddess. It is a wonderful way to experience the spiritual culture and atmosphere of Taiwan, no doubt a new experience for many people.

The reason for the temple’s construction in 1931 is fascinating! In 1910, a sacred stone resembling the goddess Guanyin was discovered nearby. Frequent miracles began to occur around the stone, prompting followers to build this beautiful temple to enshrine it.

The temple itself is visually appealing with rich, golden ornamentation and intricate figurines inside. All of this dazzling enrichment make a striking contrast with the peaceful and tranquil atmosphere of the place. The smell of burning incense and sounds of nature will surely put you in a calming trance.

After you’ve hiked all this way, wouldn’t you like to see a great view? Well, the views of downtown Taipei City, Taipei 101, and Xinyi District from the Zhangshan Temple are unparalleled! For the adventurous souls, there are three trails which branch out from here. You may spot some interesting little critters or other Taiwanese wildlife not seen in other countries.
