Office of the President
To get a peek at Taiwan’s Japanese era, check out the Tapie area near the Presidential Office Building.

First, let’s take a look at the National Women’s League, located at 27 Changsha Street.  It dates back a century, and is one of oldest western-style buildings in Taipei.  Originally home to a Japanese military club, this colonial relic was handed over to the National Women’s League in 1950.  The rectangular building is surrounded by arched verandas and portals, giving it a grand appearance.

Just across the street is the Taiwan Power Corporation’s Presidential Hostel.  This walled residence features slanted, tiled roof and white walls, reminiscent of a Mediterranean villa.

A few steps away is the Academia Historica, which once housed the postal administration of the Japanese colonial government, making it a key communications hub and target for US air raids during World War Two.  Today this building still plays a vital role, housing a collection of presidential and vice presidential documents and artifacts.

Behind the Academia Historica is the Chunghwa Telecom BoAi Service Center, which was once an early telephone exchange.  It’s flowing lines and corners, as well as distinct windows, make it a prime example of modernist architecture from the 1930s.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Building on BoAi Road is home to the Judicial Yuan and Taiwan High Court.  Its arched doorways and windows are offset by Grecian columns and an octagonal rooftop to give it an East Asian revival flair.

Let’s end our trek at the Presidential Office Biulding.  This majestic building, dating back to the Japanese era is steeped in history, as are many of the buildings nearby.

Built in 1919, it first served as the office for the Japanese colonial governor, and ever since has been Taiwan’s political epicenter.  Inside and out, the building reflects the Japanese colonial style, with its baroque undertones and imposing stature.
